A group of young people from the NDC area have been working with award winning graffiti artist Phil Blake to promote important messages about sexual health.

James Dakin, Conar Hennedy, Kane Edwards, Steven Vale, Georgina Grant and Courage Knumalo from the Venny helped to design billboard posters about safer sex and relationships which are on display around the City Centre and Wood End.

The 3m x 2m posters were designed during workshops with Midlands graffiti artist Phil Blake who won the Street Wars graffiti battle in Birmingham and participates in festivals all over the UK. The posters all carry the distinctive slogan advising, ‘Wrap It, Tap It, Scrap It!’ to encourage people to practise safe sex.

Terrence Higgins Trust, a HIV and sexual health charity sponsored the project which was run by Hannah Gorton, a student at Birmingham City University.

Hannah explained: “STIs like Chlamydia are a growing concern and the number of cases amongst under-25s is increasing. Posters like these are designed to grab attention from young people.

James Dakin, one of the young designers said: “This project is important and we have created strong adverts that will relate directly to young people by using graffiti art and good slogans.”

Keep an eye out for the posters next time your in town – there are two up on the Coventry Telegraph Car Park building and, one on West Orchard House on Bishop’s Street.
