Worried about someone's drinking

Alcoholism is a form of addiction, and addiction is a disease that anyone can suffer from. Alcohol is around us every day, yet for some, their drinking becomes uncontrollable. It can happen to any of us; old or young, male or female, from any walk of life.

Are you worried about someone’s drinking? Do you think they could be an alcoholic?

  • Do they keep drinking despite promising you that they won’t?
  • Is their drinking causing trouble at home i.e. more fights, aggressive behaviour?
  • Do they seem guilty or shameful about their drinking?
  • Do they have to drink in order to socialise?
  • Are they suffering from health problems connected with drinking?
  • Have they missed days off work because of alcohol?

Are you an alcoholic?

If you are worried about your drinking, you should ask yourself the following questions:

  • Have you ever made the decision to stop drinking for a week, but only lasted for a couple of days?
  • Have any of your friends and family suggested that you may have a drink problem and has this caused conflict?
  • Have you missed days off work because of your drinking? Are you drinking in your bathroom, car, workplace, or other public places? Or maybe you have begun to avoid socialising with people you know disapprove of your drinking?
  • Have you had any health problems connected with alcohol and still carried on doing drinking? Are you unhappy with your current sex life?
  • Have you begun to get drunk alone? Are you drinking more and more just to get that same feeling of comfort you crave?
  • Is your drinking causing you financial difficulties? Have you been lying or misleading those around you the exact amounts you are consuming?
  • Have you ever felt that your life would be better if you did not drink? But are you also afraid of what will happen if you stop drinking?

How many units of alcohol do you drink?
Most of us like a tipple. How much booze do you consume and what are the recommended limits?
