Do You Have A Flu Friend?
With cases of swine flu on the increase, the UK is preparing for large numbers of people suffering this autumn, and there is a strong chance that you or somebody you know may need a helping hand.
Thankfully swine flu is quite mild, with the majority of people recovering fully within a week, through rest and medication. Of course, there are some serious cases, but these have been in the minority and mostly affecting people with underlying health conditions.
Nevertheless, it looks like it is going to be a bleak flu season and the message is clear- if you have flu-like symptoms – stay at home, contact the National Pandemic Flu Service and have your flu friend ready!
What is a “flu friend” and will I need one?
You will need a flu friend – someone who does not have flu-like symptoms –
to collect your antivirals (Tamiflu). You will need to give them your unique
authorisation number, and some appropriate identification and ask them to
pick up the antivirals for you from the Antiviral Collection Point.
It is important that you identify now who will be your flu friends and offer your
support to those who may need a flu friend themselves, particularly those who
are vulnerable or isolated.
