  • About Project

Name: SMARTWater

Start date: 2004/05

End date: 2005/06

Project Lead: Karen Buttle-Grewer

Lead Organisation: Coventry NDC

Project description / summary:  This project provided "SMARTWater" to each domestic residence and commercial building within the three main industrial estates, in the area.  Smartwater is a liquid forensic coding system that can be used to mark property.  When dry, in nornal light it is virtually undetectable, but it glows under ultraviolet light and is almost impossible to remove and even the smallest amount can be analysed and identified, as, like DNA profiling, each smarwater code is unique.  There is also a covert ability with smartwater where a device can be fitted to premises identified as being particularly vulnerable which will, in the event of attack, spray the offender with the chemical which cannot be removed and will remain on the offenders skin, clothing, hair etc for a period up to 12 months thus enabling the police to identify the offender at a later stage.  This project provided sufficient individual packages of smartwater to protect each of the premises in the area.  It also provided registration for two years on domestic premises and one year on commercial.
