Neighbourhood Wardens
back
  • About Project

Name: Neighbourhood Wardens

Start date: 2002/03

End date: 2005/06

Project Lead: Karen Buttle-Grewer

Lead Organisation: Coventry NDC

Project description / summary: Project was to employ and establish a team of Neighbourhood Wardens who would patrol the NDC area, in order to;

  • Provide a sustainable holistic approach to addressing crime, the fear of crime and anti social behaviour through directed uniformed patrol.
  • To provide a highly visible presence and a point of contact between the local authority, other agencies and the community to improve the physical environment and improve the quality of life of the residents.
  • To link up with other projects and agencies to provide support to the community and to foster social inclusion.

Part of the project was to employ a project manager who would oversee and monitor the project implementation.

In its entirety the project would create 17 new posts, 1 x project manager, 2 x team leaders/senior wardens, 12 x wardens and 2x Admin/finance officer.

In summer 2004 a city wide consultation of what was needed for a wardens scheme across the city was undertaken, and NDC was fully consulted as part of this.

In early 2005, it was agreed that the NDC wardens would become part of the city wide scheme when NDC core funding stopped in March 2006.   The key advantages this would bring would be the flexibility of use of wardens across the city in the deployment of wardens to hot spot crime areas, as denoted by the fortnightly citywide AIMS meeting, a consistency of the wardens service across the city, a successful mainstreaming of an NDC project
