Health & Wellbeing

The Quality of Life Theme Objectives are to:

  •  To work with statutory and voluntary agencies in the area
  •  To assist local people to adopt a healthier lifestyle by ensuring that lifestyle choices are easier choices
  • To improve the quality and accessibility of local health and related services and their responsiveness to community needs
  • To provide a network of preventative support, which enhances protection and support for both children at risk and in care by reducing the number of referrals to the Children and Families Team
  • To provide a series of preventative measures to reduce health inequalities and combat teenage pregnancy
  • To provide a much wider range of interesting and positive leisure activities for all residents, but especially young people
  • To enable all members of the community to increase their participation in sport and leisure activities.

The key achievements over the past year have been: -

  • There is now an obesity / weight management programme running within the area for all residents to access, dedicated to following a holistic approach to encourage and support individuals and families to adopt healthy lifestyle behaviours.
  • A new daily drop in quit smoking clinic is reaching an average of 7 new people each week who want to quit smoking.
  • Health Publicity is working well to inform all residents of health campaigns and new service provision such as leaflet & logo designs for smoking cessation clinics and healthy waist campaigns.  Leaflets have been distributed to every household along and advertising vans have been circulating the area promoting key health messages.
  • The NDC Health Link Worker has returned to the area and is proving an effective way of promoting sessions with residents and working with project leads, to ensure that service provision is needs led.
  • The Health Theme now has strong links with the PCT and links into many of its strategies such as obesity and smoking cessation, the health theme lead sits on many boards regarding health, midwifery services, smoke free Coventry and teenage pregnancy.  The PCT Communications Director will also be carrying out a consultation / presentation to NDC residents in order to create links and include the WEHM area in the PCT Local Delivery Plan.
  • The Drug & Alcohol Support Project, Infant Mortality and Therapeutic Work for Children project cease in March 2008 as their 3 year projects are up.  The Infant Mortality project will be mainstreamed through the PCT and the RELATE team are still present in schools who pay for their counselling / therapeutic services.
  • The Leisure Activities project has been successful in gaining further funding from the Football Foundation to ensure sports development provision in the area when the Neighbourhood Centre is established.  Quality of Life funding for a sports development officer will continue at a reduced service to ensure that residents have access to sports and activities that they can continue to participate in once the Centre is up and running, this will ensure usage of the new facilities.
