Employment & Training

BACK TO WORK FOR ALI

When Ali Hussein from Wood End walked through The Workshop doors last year, he didn’t have high expectations for finding a new job.

Having been on incapacity benefit t for over a year because of surgery, he was now on jobseekers allowance and needed to find work or training. In his previous jobs Ali, aged 49, had worked in catering, manufacturing and even food production (the Walkers Crisps factory!) but he feared a permanent role was beyond his grasp having had bad experience with temping agencies.

At The Workshop an employment advisor sat down with Ali and supported him through the process of looking for work again. As a result, Ali became interested in working for the security industry however he could not do this without applying for a Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence which cost £400 (badge and training).

However, thanks to NDC, funding for his training was available at the time which meant Ali could enrol for the four day training in order to get his badge. Shortly after completing the training and receiving his licence, Ali was successful in getting a job as a Security Guard at Primark, one of the biggest employers in Coventry.

“I enjoy my new job and I’m happy that I’m now back in work. Security work can be very tiring as it sometimes involves a lot of running but it keeps me healthy. One time I chased two shoplifters around town for one hour before bringing them back to the store to return the stolen property!,” said Ali.

Debbie Beeston, Employer Liaison Offi cer, said: “Ali has now been in employment for over a year which is fantastic news. His attitude and desire to get back into work helped to access the NDC funding which only allows training if it is linked to a viable job opportunity.”

If you would like help with looking for a new job or funding for training (subject to meeting NDC eligibility criteria) please visit The Workshop in Riley Square or call 024 7658 3860.
