Education
back

The Education Theme Objectives are: -

  • To work with Statutory and Voluntary Agencies and community groups to improve educational achievement and attainment in the area and to create a learning community.
  • To work closely with the Employment Theme to promote learning as a lifestyle choice and to improve the levels of adults engaged in learning; this is because the theme has identified that a key barrier to educational attainment for children, young people and adults is a culture that does not value the benefits of learning
  • To work closely with the NDC Neighbourhood Services Theme to support families, and to look at diversionary and leisure activities for children and young people.
  • To work closely with the Employment theme to develop an approach and strategy to involve adults in education and training, and to ensure the learning of skills to support the sustainability of the area post NDC funding.

The key achievements over the past year have been: -

  • In 2002 the proportion of pupils having 5 or more GCSEs with grades A*-C in the WEHM NDC Area was 4.7%, in 2007 students leaving with the same qualification was 24.4%.  This is an 8.40% point rise on 2005/06 figures of 11% and a 20% increase since 2002/03.  This is 5 times greater than the city increase over the same period.
  • 562 pupils have benefited from projects, which have been designed to improve attainment (such as Study Support Revenue, Youth Programme Delivery, Teenage Pregnancy)
  • Over 1,600 young people have benefited from projects which have provided a youth inclusion / diversionary intervention (such as Youth Diversionary, Youth Investment Project, Sports Development Project)
  • The New Study Support Centre (run in conjunction with Wood Way Park) has supported 30 local young people with basic literacy and numeracy skills
